Minority Roles Continue To Decline (From The Hollywood Reporter)

SAG: Few roles for minority actors - By Jesse Hiestand

Minority actors with the exception of Native Americans saw their share of television and film roles continue to decline last year, mirroring the overall trend of actors losing jobs to reality TV and runaway production, according to statistics released Wednesday by SAG.

Much of the loss was said to be concentrated among lead roles for Asians and Latino male lead roles in primetime, which dropped 35% and 31%, respectively.

Roles for Latinos fell 10.5% last year, leaving them with a 5.4% share of overall roles compared with a 13.7% share of the U.S. population. The 31% decline in Latino male leads was concentrated in episodic TV. At the same time, there was a 2.4% increase in supporting roles for Latinos.

SAG said that women also remain significantly under-represented in film and TV roles. Women got 38% of total roles cast last year, a figure that has remained steady for the past several years.

SAG: Few roles for minority actors

Minority actors with the exception of Native Americans saw their share of television and film roles continue to decline last year, mirroring the overall trend of actors losing jobs to reality TV and runaway production, according to statistics released Wednesday by SAG. While the total number of TV and film roles fell 1.6% last year compared with the previous year, SAG found that encouraging because the decline has slowed notably from the 6.5% drop-off in 2002 and 9.3% in 2001. Still, much of the loss was said to be concentrated among lead roles for Asians and Latino male lead roles in primetime, which dropped 35% and 31%, respectively.

"This data ought to be a wake-up call to the industry," SAG president Melissa Gilbert said. "There is still significant work left to do to increase the opportunities for many groups." The annual report draws on data gathered from producers in accordance with the union's TV/theatrical contract. For the second straight year, white actors continued to account for 73.5% of film and TV roles.
